The Library's main function is to make relevant information and publications available for the staff of the Finnish Transport Agency and thus contribute to professional and organizational development. In order to be able to answer to requests, the library has acquired right of access to several databases and sources of information.

Besides providing in-house services, the library also offers limited access to its collections for outside clients. Some materials are freely available, while others are for reference only. Most publications are in Finnish with a brief abstract in English, but there are also English and Swedish materials. Publications issued after 2003 are stored in pdf-format.

Visitors to the library can use a PC-workstation to make searches in FINNRALIB (the library catalogue) or to browse the Internet.

The Library acts as a national member library of the OECD International Transport Research Documentation (ITRD) database. The Library also cooperates with Nordic and Baltic transport-specialised libraries.
